Hair transplant is a procedure where a surgeon adds hair taken from a body part where hair is thicker to an area that needs it. In Dubai, Hair Transplant is not only used to enrich the scalp area, but also to make one’s beard thicker.
Hair Transplant surgery utilises either of the two methods: follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS) or follicular unit extraction (FUE). Your surgeon will decide which method works best for you considering your hair distribution.
FUSS includes separating a strip of the skin from, usually, the back of your head, then dividing the strip into 500 to 2,000 small pieces containing a single or a few hairs. Next, your surgeon carefully places each piece of the strip into the holes he created in the area where the hair is needed. FUSS is sometimes called Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) as well.
With FUE, the surgeon separates hair follicles individually, not as a skin strip, to place them into the holes mentioned above. FUE does not make a scar on the scalp as FUSS does but it requires longer surgery time and is more expensive.
Direct Hair Implantation or DHI is a modification of the FUE method wherein a surgeon uses a pen-shaped device to make a canal(hole) and implant the hair follicle at the same time.
NeoGraft and Artas Robotic Hair Transplant are other modifications of the FUE method. NeoGraft is a semi-automated form of FUE and is thought to help in minimizing trauma and damage to hair follicles. The surgeon uses suction to separate (or harvest) the hair follicles from the donor area and, again, utilizes a specialized tool to control the depth of the implantation. With Artas Robotic Hair Transplant, the computer system analyzes the scalp and determines which follicles are to be harvested to maximize the survival rate and recovery. The system then proceeds to automatically extract the hair follicles until enough is obtained. The robotic system then guides the surgeon where to implant the hair follicles according to the simulation confirmed with the patient.
Stem Cell Hair Transplant is the latest of the hair transplantation techniques. Instead of directly transplanting the hair follicles collected from your body, Stem Cell Hair Transplant collects samples of the hair follicles and replicates them in a lab before implanting them on the area where the hair is needed. Stem Cell Hair Transplant does not require a large number of hairs to be removed for the surgery and success rate is known to be higher than other methods. However, the technique is still at an investigative level and has not cleared FDA approval yet.

A surgery result does not depend on the reputation of a clinic. Ultimately, it is the expertise of the surgeon that determines the outcome. Nothing can replace the skillful hands of a surgeon who has deep insight into the human body and a patient’s aspiration.
It is difficult for a patient to evaluate the skill of a surgeon. However, there are some standard checklists you should apply to choose the right surgeon.
First, they should be certified (plastic) surgeons from trustworthy institutions.
Second, check if they have excellently performed surgery for a similar case as yours. You may check their portfolio online or get it upon request to the clinic.
Third, search up what other patients say about the surgeon that you shortlisted. Platforms like DrFive.com could be a good starting point for your research.
Most plastic surgeries are elective treatments. In other words, they will not be covered by your health insurance and you need to pay for the entire treatment. Depending on a few factors we will explain below, there are quite big differences in the treatment costs and you need to ensure that treatments from your shortlisted providers are within your budget.
Don’t forget to determine when you want to get the surgery prior to contacting clinics. Most sought-after plastic surgeons have a very tight schedule and the next available slots may only open up far beyond your availability. Having a clear timeline can prevent unnecessary last minute surprises.
Even with the same surgeon at the same clinic, the price can be different according to the treatment size and methods used.
Treatment size determines the number of grafts to be transplanted. Graft is a strip of the skin where a unit of hair follicles grow together. Typically a graft contains 1 to 3 hair follicles and it is the unit that gets surgically transplanted.
Usually FUE is more expensive than FUT/FUSS as it requires more time to perform the procedure per graft. DHI or Stem Cell Hair Transplant is more expensive than FUE due to the technology still being at the early stages and less commoditized.
On average, you can expect to pay AED12 per graft for FUT/FUSS and AED15 per graft for FUE. Assuming a moderate case of 1,000 graft transplants, the price will be about AED12,000 (FUT) to AED15,000 (FUE). You might need to pay 30% to 50% more for DHI or Stem Cell Hair Transplant.
Medical groups in Dubai are diverse and numerous. Physicians come from different schools of thought and each gives their own perspective on the best treatment options. Some of these doctors are board certified from the UK, Europe or USA, while others have regional qualifications. All of whom possess a knowledge base with a specific set of training and practical knowledge.
Treatments from more reputable hospitals will usually be costlier than clinics not widely known to people. Institutions make huge investments to build a trusted brand and we, as the end-consumers, are expected to, in return, pay a premium for that brand. Certain local clinics in Dubai have established a history of providing excellent care to people, and in turn, are more expensive than new entrants in the cosmetic treatment field.
It is quite understandable that you pay more for a service from a more experienced practitioner. For cosmetic procedures, you will usually need to pay more to get treatment from plastic surgery consultants rather than specialists, GPs and other physicians, as they have more expertise and experience in the field.
