Ayurveda is a recognized medical practice in the UAE and is categorized under Traditional Complementary and Alternative Medicine (TCAM).
Ayurveda, translated from Sanskrit, means “The Science of Life” and considered by many Indians as the “Mother of All Healing”. The knowledge of Ayurveda has been practiced and passed down orally, from sages and healers to practioners for over 5,000 years. Over the years, practitioners of Ayurveda have implemented and documented its principles more methodically to promote healing and balance to health. Ayurveda is rooted in 3 biological energies of the body, called doshas and they are associated with the world’s five elements - space, air, fire, water and earth. The Doshas are called Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
Every individual maintains certain levels or ratios of Dosha, sometimes having one or more dominant than the others:
Vata, representing space and air, governs movements in the cytoplasm and cell membrane.
Pitta, representing fire and water, governs the body’s digestive or metabolic system and body temperature.
Kapha representing earth and water, governs the bones, muscles and tendons.
The key to understanding diseases according to Ayurveda, is understanding how to balance Vata, Pitta and Kapha, and how they work together to maintain a healthy mind, body and consciousness. Ayurvedic practitioners can determine each individual’s dosha and recommend a proper diet, lifestyle and Ayurvedic treatments to restore a healthy balance of energy in the body.
Ayurvedic treatments cover a variety of techniques that include: dietary adjustments, rasha shastra medicines (herbs with metals, minerals or gems), head and body massages, meditation, breathing exercises, sound therapy and mantras, and in some cases, acupuncture.
For Ayurvedic massages and therapies, below are some of the most common types provided in Dubai:
Abhyanga, is the most popular warm oil, full body massage. It helps loosen toxins, improve circulation, stimulate organs, lubricate joints, and rejuvenate the entire body.
Udvartana (or Udwarthanam), is a herbal powder concoction that is rubbed in the opposite direction of hair growth. It is suited for Kapha types and helps in reducing cellulite and fat by draining the lymphatic system and promoting circulation throughout the body.
Shirodhara, is a warm aromatic oil therapy poured onto the forehead to help promote relaxation and rejuvenation.
Takradhara, is a form of Shirodhara, and instead of oil, medicated buttermilk is poured onto the forehead, and is said to help reduce excess Vata Dosha.
Elakizhi, is a sweat-inducing treatment using medicated oil-fried herbal leaves. The leaves are tied together and massaged over the affected parts of the body. This treatment is used to improve the overall strength and fluidity of muscles and joints.
Pizhichil (Deha-dhara), is a warm oil or milk, full body massage and performed by 2 therapists. The treatment helps with treating fatigue, muscle tension and excess Vata Dosha.
The other most prominent detoxing program used in Ayurveda is Panchakarma, which translates from Sanskrit, is a combination of the words ‘Pancha’ meaning five, and ‘Karma’ relating to actions, thus it consists of five therapies: Vamana (Emesis), Virechana (purgation), Nasya (Nasal medication), Anuvasana Basti (Medicated oil enema) and Niruha Basti or Kashaya Basti (Herbal decoction enema).
Vamana (emesis) is medically-induced vomiting used to expunge toxins in the body and reduce excess Kapha Dosha. This treatment helps remove toxins mainly from the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts and is recommended for patients suffering from asthma, tonsillitis, anemia, indigestion, sinus problems, cough, and cold and other flu-like symptoms.
Virechana (purgation) is a medically induced process of extracting toxins from the blood, colon, kidneys, liver, small intestine, spleen, stomach, skin, and finally out through the anus to reduce excess Pitta Dosha. Virechana or purgation is suitable for patients with issues related to inflammations, skin diseases, diabetes and obesity.
Nasya or Nasyam (Nasal medication) is a nasal treatment that combines head, neck and shoulder massage with aromatherapy and an organic nose drip. The treatment disinfects the nasal cavity and promotes the excretion of toxic mucus, and is considered as excess Vata Dosha. Nasya is recommended for patients with headaches, insomnia, memory loss, migraines, rhinitis, sinusitis, stress, and tinnitus.
Anuvasana Basti (Medicated oil enema) is the medical detoxification of the colon administered through anal, urethral, and vaginal routes. This therapy excretes the excess Vata Dosha in the body. Anuvasan means “to stay” which is why the treatment, once introduced into the body, remains in the body longer. Anuvasana Basti is recommended for patients with neurological disorders such as hemiplegia, facial paralysis, paraplegia, poliomyelitis, sciatica, and other such conditions.
Niruha Basti (Herbal decoction enema) or Kashaya Basti is a medical cleansing of the colon through anal, urethral, and vaginal routes. This therapy is used to excrete the excess Vata Dosha in the body. Niruha means “to eliminate” which is why the treatment, once introduced into the body, immediately expels toxins from the body. Basti is recommended for patients as a follow-up to Anuvasana Basti and helps to alleviate arthritic pains, and stomach disorders.
Finding the right doctor or practitioner of Ayurveda determines everything
An Ayurveda treatment does not depend on the reputation of a clinic or facility. Ultimately, it is the expertise of the doctor or practitioner that determines the outcome. Nothing can replace the skillful hands or knowledge of an Ayurveda doctor who has deep insight and knowledge of the human body.
Research the credentials, portfolio, and other patients’ reviews of the Ayurveda clinic or practitioner
It’s difficult for a patient to evaluate the skills of Ayurvedic doctors or practitioners. However, there are some standard checklists you should apply to choose the right one:
Know your budget and schedule
