It is quite stressful when you see your hair get thinner or hairline starts to recede on your forehead. Usually we react to this with changing shampoo or looking for foods known to be good for hair growth only to find out later: most of them did not do much help. We learn it is time to get some professional assistance.

“Hair loss treatment” is a very confusing term without clear definition. To most of us who start to see their hairline receding, hair transplant surgery is not an option, at least not yet. They prefer to try non- or minimally-invasive options before opting for the full-blown surgery. Among non-surgical hair loss treatment options, our study found that only two of them are actually worth mentioning in terms of its medical efficacy: PRP and Laser. This article is written to review these options and their associated costs in Dubai.

Before we dive into the specific treatment methods for hair loss, let’s first touch upon a few guiding principles determining the aesthetic treatment prices in Dubai.

Hair loss concern

Factors for difference in treatment prices are found to be mainly:

  •     Brand awareness of the clinic: treatments from more reputable hospitals will be costlier than clinics not widely known to people. Institutions make huge investments to build a trusted brand and we are supposed to pay a premium to consume it.
  •     Location: Clinics located in Jumeirah, Downtown, or Dubai Marina need to pay higher rents than similar sized facilities located in less expensive areas of Dubai. Clinics in costlier areas of Dubai, in turn, charge more for otherwise similar services accordingly.
  •     Experience of the practitioner: It is quite understandable that you pay more for a service from a more experienced practitioner. In addition to that, if you get treatment from a doctor not a laser technician, it would cost you more. Among doctors, you will need to pay more to get the treatment from specialists such as dermatologists and plastic surgeons as they have more expertise and experience in the field than GPs and other physicians.

Clinics may offer combination of treatment methods under general “Hair loss treatments”

Comprehensive packages can include PRP, Laser, Mesotherapy, Microneedling, and etc. plus consultation with a specialist. In this case, the appropriateness of a specific package is quite hard to verify unless you dissect every single component of it. You may get a good discounted package which costs much less than the addition of each component; but the other way around is also possible.

PRP Treatment for Hair

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a substance you get when you process a small amount of your own blood using a centrifuge that spins at high speed to split up a liquid mixture. The acquired PRP is rich with growth factors that can positively affect hair growth. The doctor injects the PRP into areas on the scalp where the growth stimulation is needed. PRP is known to work like a fertilizer for the hair, helping it to get stronger and thicker. It is said to work better in the earlier phase of hair loss.

In Dubai, PRP treatment for hair is priced between AED500 to AED2,000 per session. With seasonal promotions, you can easily find Jumeirah clinics offering treatments with prices marked below AED1,000. Clinics may also combine PRP with other nutritive components such as Mesotherapy or MultiVitamin, in this case you might get charged 50 to 100% more than standalone PRP treatments.

The point to note is that hair PRP treatment does not complete with a single session. It usually requires 3 sessions in 4 to 6 weeks and follow up treatments every 4 to 6 months afterwards. If you really believe PRP hair treatment is your thing, you can consider buying a multiple session package and save 10~30% from the total cost.

Low-Level Laser Hair Therapy

Low-level laser (light) hair therapy applies low-level lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to the scalp to stimulate and enhance cell function. The efficacy of the laser hair therapy for the hair regeneration is widely debated and users comments also differ dramatically.

Laser for Hair

If you get the treatment at the clinic in Dubai, you can be charged about AED500 to AED1,000 per session. You will also be told that laser hair treatment requires multiple sessions to achieve desired outcome.

Advantages of Laser or light therapy include that it is less invasive than PRP, and at- home therapy is available by purchasing the devices which ranges from about AED1,000 to AED2,000.

Below are some frequently asked questions regarding Hair Loss Treatments in Dubai:

Who can perform Hair Loss Treatment in Dubai?

Dermal injections like PRP and Laser Therapy have different requirements regarding who can perform which according to Dubai regulation.

Dermal injections including PRP can only be done by licensed physicians. Other than Dermatologists and Plastic surgeons, GP doctors can do PRP injections provided that they have completed an accredited program and minimum requirements for clinical practice under supervision of specialists.

Both doctors and technicians can perform laser hair loss treatments in Dubai, but most likely, this is done by a licensed technician or a nurse. By law they are required to perform the treatment under doctor’s supervision. As a medical procedure, it is recommended to check the credentials of those performing the procedure through 3 party sources like DrFive.com or the clinic's own website to ensure they have the right expertise and experience.

What is the potential risk of PRP or Laser Treatments for Hair Loss?

As with PRP treatments, the fact that you are being injected with a component of your own blood significantly reduces the chance of any side effects. However, the process of injection itself can cause side effects such as mild pain or bleeding at the injection site, scalp tenderness, swelling or itching.

Most common side effect of laser hair loss treatment is skin irritation. You can possibly experience temporary discomfort, redness and swelling immediately after the treatment, which mostly subside within several hours.

What are the non-invasive alternatives to hair removal treatments?

Prescription and OTC medications: You must have heard of medicines such as Propecia (Finasteride) or Rogaine (Minoxidil). Both are FDA approved medications, that means their efficacy is more or less proven. Propecia is a prescription drug, so you can get it after consultation with a doctor. Propecia works by inhibiting DHT, the hormone responsible to cause hair loss in males. One well known side effect of Propecia is reduced sex drive, as DHT plays an important role for the sexual organs.

Rogaine (Minoxidil) is an OTC drug that does not require a doctor's prescription. It is mostly sold in the form of liquid or foam. It is not clear how Rogaine helps to regrow hair; but it is widely believed that Rogaine helps hair follicles survive by enhancing their access to nutrients and oxygen. You should be able to find Rogaine from any drug store in the UAE. One extra point for Rogaine is that it works both for men and women.

Microneedling: According to a study, use of micro needling in combination with the Rogaine showed superior (over 40%) results for hair growth. Microneedling is understood to stimulate the cell regeneration process by artificially creating micro wounds on the scalp. Microneedling can be done both at the clinic or at home. Microneedling devices are widely available at beauty shops in the UAE.
