What is your recommendation for facials, men and women. How do they differ, if so why and how?

For men, I usually recommend that men shave their facial hair the night before coming in for treatment. He will have no irritation on his skin and less chance of developing hyperpigmentations post-treatment. Of course, male and female skin is different. Men's skin is much thicker, oilier and warmer. It contains more sebaceous and sweat glands, an increased density of hair follicles. The skin is more exposed to irritation from shaving and vulnerable to ingrown hairs. Coming back to the question, regarding facials for men and women, each type of patient will have a different set of skin conditions. So specialists are equipped to address the problem of a particular individual in different ways. It may vary from patient to patient, so facial procedures will be delivered accordingly to the patient's needs.

What differentiates a good facial treatment from a bad one. is it product and equipment or is is the specialists own technique?

A variety of conditions are needed for either good or bad results during a facial treatment. There are some factors that will definitely lead to bad results, for example, it could be a device failure during the procedure, language barrier between the specialist and patient, specialist's misunderstanding or underestimating the proper usage of manual devices and overall experience of the specialist performing the facial treatment.

What are the latest techniques or trends in the market today for great facial results?

The latest technique or trends in the market today are the following: hydrafacials, Ultherapy - a device for lifting of sagging skin, Kybella - fat reduction injections, Collagen injections, micro-needling and RF microneeding.

Is there a specific skin care treatment for different age groups or is it more or less the same throughout your lifetime. What is your perspective?

When we start to analyze the anatomical and genetic changes in our body by the different layers: skin, fat, muscles, ligaments, bones, we observe that every layer starts to face changes that leads to the aging process.

Our skin really starts to age in our mid-30s with more and more changes happening into our 40s and 50s. Skin starts to become loose and sagging. Fat is distributed under the skin nicely in our youth. However, as we age and experience fat loss, that leads to skin thinning, it starts to drift downwards, gathering at the jaw and neck. Also, fat cumulation in the lower parts of the face causes jowls around the neck and bagging around the chin.

With bone density loss, it leads to retraction of the jawline and that causes jowls and neck aging. Our eye sockets start to widen and that gives us that "tired" look. The angle decrease of the bone between the eyebrow leads to frown lines, droopy eyelids and crow's feet.

For every change we experience in our skin, there are suitable devices and products. I highly recommend people to start taking steps in their 20s to slow down the skin aging process. Treatments like chemical peels, Hydrafacial, mesotherapy, PRP, Microdermabrasion, microneedling, RF and microneedling, Carbon laser, rejuvenation with laser, there are many options to prevent aging. Using the proper product and procedures at any age is crucial. Buying or using the wrong products can cause serious damage to the skin. My opinion is that facial products for home care should be chosen by the specialist and used in the correct way to prevent early aging and further damaging your skin. The biggest factor in skin aging prevention is the education. People should learn or be more aware about the factors that contribute the most to skin aging such as sun exposure, bad hygiene habits, and an unhealthy life style.

Being a mother to a teenage daughter, what was your advice to her when she wanted to start using cosmetics?

A woman's teenage years is an important stage in her life in terms of her growth in general. It's a delicate stage attributing to hormonal changes, which can lead to skin complications such as acne, post acne scarring, post inflammatory pigmentation, rosacea and etc. It is defintely a time when our daughters need our guidance. If skin begins to develop issues, it is always better to consult with a specialist in time to prevent the aggravation of the problem. It is very important knowing your skin type and choosing the suitable products for your skin care. Regarding cosmetics products for teenagers, i.e. makeup, I believe if your skin is healthy and clean then it doesn't need coverage with foundation or powder. If she is using mascara and lipstick etc., then it is absolutely mandatory to remove it before she goes to bed and to nourish and moisturize the skin. It is very important to teach teenagers about proper face and skin hygiene. Another very important advice to teenage girls is to never share make up with friends or anybody else. Sharing makeup such as lipstick or eye makeup can lead to a transfer of bacteria from person to person and cause lip sores, eye infections and can even aggravate existing skin issues such as acne.
