Meet Dr Bushr Mrad, consultant general and bariatric surgeon at Awazen Medical Center in Abu Dhabi. He is both an American and Canadian Board Certified with special interest in minimally invasive bariatric surgery.
According to Dr Bushr, as recent as a few years ago, people used to view obesity as state of well-being and those who suffered from it were considered lazy and disabled. In addition, people who suffered from obesity were those who have made certain lifestyle choices. However, Dr Bushr asserts that obesity is a disease that requires medical treatment. Weight gain and obesity occurs when there is a deficiency in your metabolism and when your caloric intake exceeds your body’s ability to burn them effectively. Over time, obesity can lead to life-threatening issues related to your heart, liver and arteries. Dr Bushr explains that in addition to the health complications created by obesity such as diabetes, high blood pressure, bad cholesterol and body pains, obesity also leads to social aversion and negative psychological behavior. Dr Bushr believes the only solution that has proven over the years to be the most effective in curbing obesity is living a healthy lifestyle. The three fundemental pillars to a healthier lifestyle involves the management of: time, diet and active living. Studies have also shown that having a partner has proven to achive more optimal results for healthier living. Having a personal trainer, working out 3 times a week and following up with a specialist in weight loss is very important in maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. Obesity is a Disease
