You have well-aligned teeth, perhaps one or two misaligned teeth but when you smile, they just don’t seem to pop for you. You’ve cleaned, bleached and mostly taken the best care of your teeth yet they seem to lack that “hollywood” effect. Or, you could have chipped your tooth chewing one too many ice cubes!
If you’ve exhausted your efforts trying to achieve the smile you desire, then choosing veneers should be your next viable solution for perfecting your smile.
Dental veneers are a wafer-thin, shell-shaped material designed and built to bond on top of your tooth to create a natural and suitable aesthetic improvement to your smile. There are different types of dental veneers to consider based on preference, structural integrity and budget. The most commonly referred to veneers are: resin composite veneers and ceramic-based veneers.
A. Resin Composite Veneers sometimes referred to as chairside veneers, are cost-effective and usually your first option for consideration. They can be fabricated and applied on-site and on the same day. Once fabricated and applied to the surface of the tooth, the veneer is shaped and polished to its desired effect. The biggest advantage for the use of composite veneers is reversibility, meaning that they can be removed and replaced whenever needed. However, the biggest disadvantage to composite veneers is that they are most susceptible to staining over time and require careful and thorough polishing and periodic dental check-ups. Also, they are technically less durable than ceramic veneers.
B. Ceramic Veneers
Porcelain Veneers are either composed of Leucite-reinforced ceramic or Lithium Disilicate (also known in the market as the Emax Veneer). Regarded as a more expensive option veneer, they are more durable to staining and stronger than resin composite veneers. Porcelain veneers safely last twice as long as composite veneers while giving you a more natural tooth aesthetic. Regardless of abnormalities in your teeth, spacing, discoloration and other issues, dentists will usually recommend porcelain over resin composite veneers to remedy most dental issues. The only downside to porcelain veneers is that the procedure is irreversible so getting it done with the right dentist is critical.
Zirconia Veneers is made mostly from a type of ceramic material known as zirconia oxide. This type of veneer offers almost all of the same features mentioned above for porcelain veneers but technically stronger and more durable. In addition, due to the strength of zirconia veneers, they can be prepared as thin as 0.5 mm as opposed to porcelain veneer thicknesses of 1.5 to 2 mm. Consequently, Zirconia veneers saves more of the patient’s original tooth at the time of bonding as less tooth needs to be shaved off.
Lumineers is a brand of ceramic veneers made from a specific type of ultra-thin patented ceramic material called Cerinate. It measures thinner than zirconia at 0.2 mm and unlike other ceramic veneer s, the application of lumineers can be reversed. Shaving your natural tooth and removing enamel is not needed and the process is pain-free and quick in the sense that only a mold is made during your first visit and for the second visit, the lumineer is simply applied directly on top of your tooth.
For some patients, getting a quick fix for their teeth before an important event and spending as little money as possible is most important, while others look for the best solution irrespective of time and money. Given our faster lifestyles and needs for the best possible outcomes, dentists will provide patients with a practical approach to achieving a perfect smile, taking into consideration important factors such as age, functionality, budget and oral habits.
