What is Filling and repair?

We are all guilty of having late night snacks, then skip brushing our teeth before hitting the pillow. Doing this one too many nights in a row, compounded with missing our periodic dentist appointments can eventually lead to cavities. Cavities, or caries are tiny fractures that occur on the surface of your teeth that start to decay due to an excessive build-up of plaque. Once your dentist confirms to you that you have cavities, the next step would be to remove the decay and prep the cleaned area for a dental filling.

Traditionally there are standard materials used for fillings such as dental amalgam (silver) which is the most common and durable and least expensive. However, they are the least preferred due to its mismatch and effect in color with other teeth. Next, you have composite fillings which are more expensive than dental amalgam but closely match surrounding teeth and require less prep work. Composite fillings are also more prone to breakage and less durable than dental amalgam. Newer type dental fillings such as ceramics and gold are options to consider however with specific recommendations from your dentist according to your dental requirements and preferences.
