It is completely normal to feel self conscious or uncomfortable when you smile, especially when you have one or more teeth missing. Besides the aesthetics, having even a single tooth missing from your mouth could open the floodgates of problems for the rest of your mouth. Problems such as teeth shifting, bone eroding underneath the missing tooth and gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis.
When it comes to replacing a missing tooth or teeth while providing natural retainability, dental implants are generally the best solution. There are generally two types of dental implants: Endosteal and Subperiosteal.
Endosteal implants are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone. First, the dentist will progressively drill a hole into the gum before inserting a titanium screw and cover into the jawbone. After the gum heals and fuses with the implant, an abutment is placed on top of the implant to act as a connector to the crown. Once a crown is fabricated it is finally attached and cemented into the abutment.
Subperiosteal Implants are dental implants placed under the gum but either on or above the jawbone. This type of implant may be used in patients who do not have enough healthy natural jawbone and unable to, or prefer not to undergo a bone augmentation procedure to rebuild their jawbone. Essentially, a subperiosteal implant works as a saddle on top of the tooth and designed to cover a larger area of teeth for reconstruction.
