Monica is a qualified Kinderkineticist/Pediatric Occupational Therapist from the University of the Free State in South Africa. Bachelors degree in Human Movement Science & Post-graduation in Kinderkinetics/ Pediatric Occupational Therapy. Pediatric Occupational Therapy is a new field of study specializing in gross and fine motor development in children aged 0-13 years. Further trained in binocular vision skills, strabismus and vision related learning difficulties.
Monica knew from a very young age she wanted to work with children. She started volunteer work at an Orphanage in South Africa from the young age of 16 years. She realized then the support which was needed in such organizations and furthered her career in child care.
After her 4 years of study Monica started working at a variety of nursery schools assessing children’s motor development, presenting gross motor programs and assisting teachers with any classroom recommendations and early intervention programs. This close work within school environments with teachers and in-house therapist, on school premises, aided in a more goal-directed approach to treatment and early prevention of scholastic challenges in children.
Monica has for the last 3 years furthered her field of study to include Vision Therapy. Monica worked in an Optometric practice in South Africa for 3 years focusing on Vision Therapy.
Vision Therapy is often defined as physical exercise for your eyes and brain. Vision Therapy works on strengthening eye muscle control to ensure the brain is receiving information clearly, as our eyes serve as the input system for most learning especially during school years.
In 2012 Monica started her own practice in South Africa specializing in motor skill development and vision therapy. She worked as part of a multidisciplinary team including: Speech Therapist, Dietician, Optometrist and Psychologists.
Monica has been working in Dubai for the past 3 years in special needs schools and learning support centres, namely: Dubai Center for Special needs, Pulse Center and Child Early Intervention Medical Center.
Monica has through her experience being able to apply a more holistic approach to the therapy process and has applied her knowledge to adapt to the constant changes arising in child development.
Motor treatment includes: fine motor skills enhancement, hand/eye coordination, special needs stimulation: autism-PDD, Dyspraxia as well as additional therapies such as: reading therapy, vision therapy (muscle related eye exercises) & visual processing diagnosis and treatment.
