One patient was worried about his high HBA1c test, which is an average blood sugar for the past 3 months. The value of HBA1c was always out of range for normal. Though his blood sugar at home is consistently in normal range both fasting and after food.
on his clinic visit we performed a thorough physical examination and then with the help of few specific laboratory results, he was found to have a hemoglobin variant and in which case HBA1c is not the ideal test to rely on.
Take home message: Only laboratory results are not sufficient for proper management, a good insight, a proper history and detailed physical examination in the clinic are the foundation for proper diagnosis and treatment.
